book-of-coversations-mateo.jpg

Mateo was one of 120 artists who contributed an image for “The Book of Conversations”. On each spread there’s a question which is meant to provoke discussion (Mateo’s question is “Is life short or long?”).

Book of Conversations

When was the last time you had a great conversation? A conversation that was out of the blue, intriguing and interesting. A conversation where you found out so much more about your friends and so much about yourself.

The Book of Conversations came to life because we simply aren’t as good at talking as we used to be. Too often we just trade information. What we did, what we bought, where we went, what we did at work.

The book is a collection of questions, each question a conversation starter. It’s the intrigue of exploring someone and discovering what lies beneath. Some questions are deep, some trivial and some you will never forget.

However, just words were not enough. Images provoke people in ways that words sometimes can’t. 120 artists, graphic designers, creative directors, art directors, photographers, illustrators and animators were approached and were each given a question.

Their task was to provoke this question with an image. The image could make the reader cry, shout, laugh or think. But most importantly, it should get them to talk.

Let’s bring back the art of conversation to a world that needs it more than ever.

Let the discussion begin.

The Book of Conversations.

Christian (deerBLN) takes part in a group exhibition at Kayo Gallery, Salt Lake City, and as far as I could see on his Facebook, will also be attending the vernissage ^^

KAYO GALLERY SHOW “A STRONG PRESENCE” FEATURES ARTISTS FROM SAN FRANCISCO, UTAH AND BERLIN THROUGH NOVEMBER

A STRONG PRESENCE
New works by Michael Page, Christian Rothenhagen, Shawn Webber and Corey Day/Colour Maisch
October 16 – November 17, 2009
Gallery Stroll Opening Reception Friday, October 16 from 6-9pm

The art in this month’s Kayo Gallery show is very “there.” It is tangible, external, present. It leaps out—as if trying to reach you before you can touch it. The artists — Michael Page, Christian Rothenhagen, Shawn Webber and the team of Corey Day and Colour Maisch — all have a knack for abstract realism, allowing you to feel their work with your body and your mind.

Webber’s paintings depict the indeterminate zones where the disparate meet. Tension is visceral, the reality tenuous. He brings a haunting beauty to subjects that might normally be seen as odd or ugly. Rothenhagen brings us back from fantasy to the streets. Going by the moniker deerBLN, his illustration and design bring a sharp portrayal of the city to the viewer: edges, textures and colors that might not be the most comfortable. Page’s painting having a gaudy lushness—you are unable to look away as you discover more and more about the pieces and yourself. According to Page, “Environmental neglect and its devastating effects reside in many of my paintings…there is also expressed discontent with the state of our political system and those that wield power so callously.” Day and Maisch are a team working to shine a light on the presence of shadows that remain from the excavation of memories. Their piece for this show hides affects and effects in every nook and cranny.

“This is a powerful mix of art and artists,” says gallery owner Davina Pallone. “The tension among the works is as satisfying as the harmony. However you feel about the pieces, you will indeed feel.”

Since then the color machines and animals have landed on planet earth to make our daily environment more colorful. You can find them in the streets, abandoned areas and hall of fames around our globe.
