RadioEins, November 22nd

Every year there are hundreds of new picture calendars, and always with the same boring themes – cats, horses, dogs, actors, dead musicians, etc…
But Mark Diening found three outstanding calendars, and his number one recommendation is *Tadaaaa* the Zozoville Kalendarium 2010!!

If you follow this link you can listen to the entire radio show:

I am not generally a big fan of the former works of Stefan Nadelman. But if this is the new standard. Whee. Mr Nadelman, You’ve gor yourself a follower. This video Directed and animated by Stefan Nadelman is produced by Tourist Pictures.

It is stopmotion animated Kupferstich, and features some of the most bewildering weaponery in the west.

The music is Ramona Falls; a soloproject of a certain Brent Knopf. You gotta love…

Mr. Fons Schiedon announces:

“A few months ago I designed a poster for my short film “Hare”. Really just for my own entertainment, until I heard from a few people that they liked the design enough to have it in their house/garage/storage room/palazzo. Fantastic, I thought. Fast forward to today, I can hardly enter my bedroom because of an oversized box of printed merchandise sitting on the floor. Now what?!

You can help, by getting one!

These are generously sized posters (A1: 594 × 841 mm), fullcolor offset on a 135 grams semigloss poster stock. It’s a nice print with excellent color reproduction, and selling for the friendly price of 8 euros +shipping. I figured that you could barely purchase a Deuce Bigalow European Gigilo poster for the same price, so…just saying.

And, I’m throwing in some free stickers and mini postcards on the first 50 orders

Haha, I didn’t know there was something like this manual for film productions. Finally, someone answers the question “How Far Away IS Safe?” Definitely fun to read! Safety first!

” This guideline is intended to be utilized by property department persons, actor / stunt players and others using blank fire adapted weapons. ”

the-invisible-college.jpg

Through the Magic Pony Newsletter I came across Stephen Appleby-Barr’s impressive portrait paintings. I wish I could visit the exhibition, but Toronto …?

The Invisible College draws inspiration from an independent organization of philosophers whose purpose was to acquire knowledge through experimental investigation in 16th century Europe. Akin to the guild system, this group practice is exemplified by Hegelian collaboration: the free transfer of thought, expertise and tradition carried out without the establishment of designated facilities or institutional authority. Appleby-Barr explores the state of the personal disassociation with tradition and searches to find a connection with one’s self and heritage. Working within a body of meticulously detailed oil portraits, Appleby-Barr conjures clues to uncovering the secrets of his own creation.

Host: MODART
Start Time: Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 7:00pm
Location: Senatsreservespeicher Artitude e.V. at Cuvrystreet 3-4 Berlin
http://www.artwallbreakers.com/

The Street-Art-Exhibition-series ends with a big get-together

2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. A historical moment in German history, as well as for the cultural scene of the Street Art movement. On one hand, the Berlin Wall represents a salient symbol of the Cold War and the separation of Germany. On the other hand, it represents a creative areal of a peacefull revolution and the biggest open-air galery in the world The illustrator, musician and artist will only stay a couple of hours in his former home town Berlin on November 7th.

The Munich native has been living in New York since 2006. Jim Avignon is well known for his speed, while painting a lot of pictures and selling these cheap or even giving them away for free. Designing Swatch watches, airplanes or cars comes as natural to him as giving prison doors a new look.

The latter he’ll be undertaking live on November 7th in Kreuzberg. Three doors of a DDR prison in Saxonia are provided in it’s natural grey for Jim to design them. Moreover, the multi-talented Jim will also be presenting his latest album for the first time during a musical performance on the final evening of the Art WallBreakers Festival. Under the name NEOANGIN, the musician Avignon has already released 9 CDs with electronic music since 1997. Last but no least, works from his private collection which aren’t for sale will also be exhibited.

Everybody, eager to enjoy a “pure” Jim Avignon event is cordially invited. The doors of the Senatsreservespeicher – Artitude e.V. at Cuvrystreet 3-4, will open for the Art WallBreakers finale at 7 pm on November 7th.

That sounds as interesting as freaky –

“Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia is a border control checkpoint to enter your own dreams. It’s operated by the Department of Dreamland Security, who are here to protect and serve your Dreams. They will ensure a safe and smooth passage into your own Dreamworld and make sure you Dream the right Dream, most suitable for you and your needs. At the same time preventing the wrong people from entering your Dreams and turning your Dreams into nightmares.”

The Checkpoint will be operational during extended dream business hours on the 7th and 8th of November 2009 at the Stattbad Wedding, Gerichtstr 65, 13347 Berlin, Germany dreamyourtopia.com

We at KAISERBRAND recently animated a commercial for Ravensburger’s new game “Wo War’s”. It’s a cute red dragon (traditionally animated) interacting with an actor-family in – of course – an illustrated world. The commercial is on air since today and you can see it at Nick and Super RTL. Hopefully we can add the clip to our website soon…

Until then you can watch it on the Ravensburger website:

Speaking of Intoxicated Demons reminds me of a funny coincidence. Two weeks ago my mother organized a real family reunion, where the different family branches met for the first time after our parents and grandparents fled from East Prussia during the war.
I sat at the “children’s table” (the age varied between 29 and 50), and soon we discovered that almost everyone at the table was some kind of artist – fine arts, music, photography or text. Almost everyone lived in Berlin, and one of my very distant cousins even had an exhibition (WORLD OF ILLUSTRATION) at Intoxicated Demons Gallery this year. We could have met there without knowing it.
This is his website http://peterhintz.com/

Berlin, the world, is such a small place.

frischfleisch.jpg

They’ve just returned from STROKE.01, the Urban Art Fair in Munich, but the intoxicated demons need no rest: the next exhibition already starts this week.

STEPHEN TOMPKINS – FRISCHFLEISCH @ INTOXICATED DEMONS GALLERY
http://www.intoxicated-demons.com/

>>Vernissage

On friday, november 6th we would like to welcome you to the opening reception of “Frischfleisch” at our new showroom (Schliemannstrasse 12 / am Helmholtzplatz).

For your comfort we will serve “Frischfleisch”.

>>Animation tour through Berlin

On thursday, november 5th Stephen and the gallery staff will do a guerilla tour through Berlin. With our portable projector we will display his new animated short directly on the “architectural incarnations of greed”.

Who has the power in the state? Politics or the economy? Who dictates tendencies in the market and the developments of our life? It is ‘we’! But this ‘we’ is neither a representative cross section of democratic currents nor is it the union of reason-oriented opinion doers.
‘We’ that is the mass, the raw mass and the social mobilization. The uncontrollable and insatiable ones which are driven without consideration for status, education, origin or religion by a only one large impulse: greed! It is greed for power, for consumption, greed for knowledge, for acknowledgment, sex, beauty and force. We want constantly new, we want ever more of it and we it above all fast: We need “fresh meat”. FRISCHFLEISCH!

As Brad Martin of Juxtapoz wrote about Stephen Tompkins’ work: “What would happen if you took classic 1920′s cartoons and Ren and Stimpy episodes, chewed them up with shades of primary colors, and then horcked the whole thing onto a canvas? Nothing as good as Stephen Tompkins’ work, for sure, though that’s exactly what his pieces remind me of. It’s like an abstract celebration of cartoon body parts in a roiling pop orgy.”

Stephen Tompkins has been exhibiting in the US and Europe since the late 1990′s with his complex deconstructions of his own iconography and invented comic (and somewhat mad) forms. His explosive work and style has been shown in innumerable exhibitions in the USA and Europe and his work has recently garnered the attention of some museum curators with exhibition of work seemingly around the corner. Apart from Tompkins’ prolific and diverse range of mediums (from painting, drawing, animation, sculpture) Tompkins has leaped headlong into his other interest, film. He recently had an unusual opportunity to portray an EMT extra role in Werner Herzog’s and David Lynch’s collaborative new film “My Son, My Son – What Have Ye Done?” plucked for the small role directly by Herzog himself. This year he released 13 music videos and an album entitled “Daniel Johnston at Home LIVE” (available on iTunes) from footage he shot in Waller Texas while living in Austin in 1999, of the legendary indie/artist musician and his friend Daniel Johnston.
